Calala Private Island

Location: Nicaragua

Bedrooms: 4

Guests: 8

This could be the ultimate barefoot paradise and the perfect castaway location. Here on idyllic Calala, you’ll have an entire private island to yourself, with a wonderfully dedicated and discreet team of over 20 staff to look after your every wish during your luxury holiday. Located in an undiscovered part of the Caribbean, just off the coast of Nicaragua and covering 11 acres, this beautiful unspoilt island accommodates a maximum of eight adults and two children and was developed in complete harmony with nature and the local communities. This is truly the place to relax, kick off your shoes and become one with nature.

The accommodation

  • There are just 4 beachfront suites, each with a king size bed and en-suite bathroom with semi al fresco shower, a private veranda and secluded beachfront palapas with hammock and couch. The master suite is the largest of the four with a sitting area and extra bed suitable for two children

  • Lounge by the pretty infinity pool with swim-up bar

  • Have a relaxing massage in one of the private pavilions by the seashore

  • There are two restaurants on the island; a casual beachside lunch area and a more formal evening dining restaurant

  • Take lunch or dinner in a variety of locations around the island including on your own terrace

  • Enjoy a beach barbecue prepared by your chef and including such delights as local lobster, freshly caught fish, steak, ribs and a multitude of different salads

  • For those who need contact with the outside world, there is WiFi on the island

  • An amazing team of over 20 staff to look after your every need

Things to do on your doorstep

  • Rum Tasting - enjoy a journey through the tastes and history of rum in Nicaragua and the Caribbean

  • Between March and October, the island is a nesting site for the endangered Hawksbill Turtle. Usually this happens at night and you can ask the staff to wake you to watch as the females appear on land to nest and lay 60-150 eggs at a time

  • Snorkel along the reefs that lie just below the waterline around the island – an abundance of brightly coloured tropical fish awaits

  • Take to the water on a paddle board and savour the beautiful island views as you balance

  • Try some kayaking around the island or further afield. The warm and tranquil, crystal-clear waters that surround Calala are perfect for sea-going adventures. Record your fastest time to kayak around the island and join the coveted leader board

  • Gaze at the myriad of stars in the night sky on the beach or pier away from all artificial light. Ask the staff to power down the whole island for a truly memorable experience

  • Take a dip in the sea from one of the beaches on the island

  • Enjoy a day on the water for a traditional fishing experience and fish like a native. Rather than use a rod and line, you will fish with apiece of string and coconut husk

  • Join your personal chef for a cookery class to learn how to make the traditional “rundown” stew or your favourite Calala dish

  • Try to spot one of the island’s resident sloths relaxing in the trees

A little further afield

  • Be whisked away to spend the day on a deserted island with a picnic hamper specially prepared by the staff. Have a secluded, private afternoon of sun, sea, swimming and snorkelling

  • Visit Pearl Lagoon and experience authentic NiCaribbean culture. Stroll through the market stalls and try some rustic local cuisine at a seafront restaurant

  • Do some island hopping around the Pearl Islands, first discovered by Christopher Columbus back in 1502

  • Enjoy cocktails at sunset from a nearby sandbar just a short boat ride from the island

Location

Calala Island is one of the Pearl Cays, a string of small islands located off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. The journey to Calala involves a domestic flight from Managua to Bluefields (approximately 60-90 minutes), followed by a transfer by road to the harbour then a boat ride of 90-120 minutes or so. If you prefer, you can also reach Calala by helicopter in around 80 minutes from Managua. Pearl Lagoon is just 45 minutes away by boat
